Alternatives for Self-Harm

The urges are strong, but they will go down. That I can promise. Even if you don’t believe it. I know how hard it is, you want to hurt yourself to lessen your suffering. You’re trying so hard, but you don’t feel like your “good” is good enough. But, you’re wrong.  You’re fighting harder than anyone could ever know by looking at your smile trying to block out the pounding thoughts that scream at your every move. Before you pick up that blade, the knife, a razor, a lighter, etc. remember how far you’ve come, you much you are fighting to keep yourself alive.

For me, Distractions have been the main thing that have been very helpful when I am having really strong urges to Self Harm. If you’re struggling, here are some things that have helped me and could be helpful to you as well. You can list the pros and cons of self harming off in your head. It can be difficult to come up with cons because its extremely hard to take away that one thing that is helping you cope.

  1. The Butterfly Project
  2. Sharpie Tattoos
  3. Cuddle with you’re favourite stuffed animal
  4. Write poetry ( it doesn’t matter if it sucks, just write your little heart out)
  5. Watch a favourite T.V show
  6. Homework
  7. Paint your nails
  8. Be with other people
  9. Go for a nature walk
  10. Cuddle with your dog or cat
  11. Think about how much you miss the way your skin was before the self harm.
  12. Write a letter to someone but don’t send it
  13. Reach out to someone you trust.
  14. Let yourself cry.
  15. Take a nap
  16. Colour with crayons
  17. Fill a colouring book 
  18. Do the exact opposite of what you really want to do.
  19. Smile at a stranger.
  20. Perform a random act of kindness
  21. Read a book
  22. Listen to music (Preferably not music that will bring you down)
  23. The Semi-Colon Project
  24. Have a pillow fight with a wall
  25. Go for a run
  26. Find someone else you can help (Volunteer somewhere)
  27. Blog about everything that pisses you off
  28. Watch Cute cat videos on youtube
  29. Rip Paper into really small pieces
  30. Paint or draw
  31. Snap an elastic band on your wrist
  32. Hold Ice Cubes
  33. Have a hot shower
  34. look up random weird facts
  35. scribble on photos of people in magazines
  36. Splatter paint
  37. Pop bubble wrap
  38. Have a pillow fight with the wall
  39. Put a band aid where you want to cut (self harm)
  40. Curl up in a blanket
  41. Ask for a hug
  42. Crush a plastic cup
